Description
Join the Harford County Chamber of Commerce and Joe DiBasilio, Community Schools Coordinator with Harford County Public Schools, for a conversation about a new initiative that will begin in the Fall of 2021, the Apprenticeship Maryland Program. This is a youth apprenticeship model that HCPS will be offering to students in conjunction with the State of Maryland. Part of this program will involve high school juniors and seniors working as apprentices with participating businesses within Harford County. HCPS currently has agreements with companies in the automotive and barbering fields, but are actively recruiting more participants.
A few of the requirements are as follows:
- Students must work a minimum of 450 hours over the course of their participation in the program (2 years)
- Students will be paid at least minimum wage
- The students will receive classroom instruction pertaining to the apprenticeship during school which will be paired with their on the job experience
- There will be ample availability for the students to work. The school will operate on a hybrid model wherein students will only be attending classes 2 days/week, leaving 3 potential weekdays as well as weekends available
- Transportation to/from job site is solely the responsibility of the student
- The primary goal of the students participation in this program is to not only learn an invaluable job skill, but have the opportunity to obtain fulltime employment with the company after graduation
